Love, Chuunibyou & Other Delusions Review

What is Chuunibyou?
Rikka from Chuunbiyo

Do you remember your awkward “I’m 14 years old now and this is cool” phase? Does thinking back to those times make you cringe with extreme embarrassment? Now imagine that feeling exploded into an anime, and you will have “Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!” Chuunibyou is the Japanese term for “Middle School 2nd year syndrome” and this series is all about dealing with that embarrassing side of yourself.

Beyond the surface of Chuunibyou

A lot of anime tries to capture teenage psychology but I feel Chuunibyou does it in a very unique way that a lot of us can relate to. We all try to forget that edgelord phase of our lives, but by denying it, does this disconnect us from who we are? Is life really that much better by being a realist and denying the power of our imaginations? Do you remember the first time you fell in love and how terrifying it was? Chuunibyou appears as a cute anime on the surface but it actually tackles some very deep topics.

Story Synopsis
Rikka eye in Chuunibyou

Yuuta Togashi is starting school at a high school very far from his original junior high school where none of his classmates were attending. He spent his time in junior high known as the “Dark Flame Master” and wanted to distance himself from that past. Alas, our pasts are not something we can easily run from.
Rikka
He soon meets Rikka Takanashi who introduces herself as:

“I am the eye of the wicked lord, member number zero, Rikka Takanashi!”

What ensues through this series is the conflict of the characters moving between embracing the realism of the world and finding their identity through their illusions of grandeur. This is an emotional journey and you will find yourself excited to watch each episode in a marathon!

I can recommend this show to nearly everyone, especially if you are a teenager and older. The characters and situations are relatable. The animation and art style is also cute and beautiful.
